Why Great Government?

Abraham Lincoln once said that the purpose of government is to provide services for a community of people they need to have done, but that they cannot or will not do for themselves in their separate and individual capacities. Lincoln knew that government is what binds citizens together, and builds their common safety and prosperity. Government is the mighty foundation of our nation and a supporter of our commerce and prosperity. Without government we would not have property rights, currency, municipal water and sewer service, schools, courts, police or fire. We would not be safe in our homes and communities. Without Government no one could protect our personal rights or Civil Rights. There would be no network of airports, harbors, railroads, parks, and highways. And the wholesome production of our food and pharmaceuticals could not be assured. There are literally thousands of such services provided directly or indirectly by government that are essential for our prosperity, health, opportunity and growth – and all of these things together are the building blocks of our nation. Government is our great shared Commonwealth, and those of us who work in Government have a responsibility to use the taxes and revenues we collect, to build a nation with a great opportunity for all. Government is one for all and all for the one. When we say we are citizens, we acknowledge that our nation is made up of all of us together! The job of building a Great Government is one that benefits everyone, and that everyone can take pride in. When we salute our flag we acknowledge that Government is what makes us a nation.
